When Rhymesayers Entertainment called and wanted a motion graphics piece for Soundset in a weekend, I knew I was going to need some help. Enter Taylor Pemberton, a designer currently attending SCAD, but originally hailing from the Minneapolis Area. Taylor and I had worked together on a couple projects before and I knew his understanding of motion graphics and typography would be an asset. Together while over 800 miles away, Taylor and I cranked out a motion version of Adam Garcia’s flyer artwork. Three great designers, a well-rounded list of rappers, America’s best Indie Rap label, and a few late ights later this baby popped out.
We wanted to attempt to make the video feel handmade. From the low framerate to the awkward movements and cutout shapes, no animation techniques were used that could not be easily replicated by hand with a copy stand. The result is a stylisically low-fi but dynamically engaging video for one of the best summer festivals around. Oh, and I can now cross off that entry in my “things to do before I die” list about doing something with Meth & Red in it.
